A new era for India’s naval innovation

Abhishek Singh Senior Vice President for India and Southeast Asia Defence at Rolls Royce said the company’s expertise in integrated hybrid electric and fully electric propulsion systems makes it uniquely positioned to support India’s naval modernisation. The goal is to develop advanced propulsion solutions that blend power sustainability and reliability.

“Rolls Royce is well placed to support India’s naval ambitions with our proven experience in delivering high performance hybrid and electric propulsion systems,” Singh said. He added that Rolls Royce’s MT30 marine gas turbine has already become a global benchmark for power density and reliability serving as the backbone for several advanced naval fleets worldwide.

The MT30 advantage and UK India collaboration

The announcement came as HMS Prince of Wales docked in Mumbai showcasing the UK’s naval might and advanced engineering powered by Rolls Royce’s MT30 gas turbines. Each engine generates up to 36 megawatts of power and together with four medium speed diesel generators delivers an output of 109 megawatts — enough energy to power a small city.

Alex Zino, Director of Business Development and Future Programmes at Rolls Royce highlighted that this visit was a key opportunity to demonstrate the scale and sophistication of British naval engineering to Indian defence leaders. “We are proud to power the Carrier Strike Group and this visit lets India see our propulsion systems in action. These technologies can help extend the operational reach and endurance of the Indian Navy,” Zino said.

Strengthening defence and sustainability goals

Rolls Royce’s move aligns closely with India’s drive to build a modern and eco friendly defence ecosystem. Electric and hybrid propulsion systems not only reduce emissions but also improve efficiency and reduce maintenance costs for future naval vessels. The company is also expanding its supply chain and defence engineering footprint within India reinforcing its long term commitment to the country’s defence sector across air land and sea.

By exploring electric propulsion for warships India signals a strong step toward cleaner technology integration in military applications. The collaboration could mark a defining shift in how modern fleets are designed paving the way for quieter energy efficient and environmentally conscious vessels.

As the global defence industry evolves toward sustainability Rolls Royce’s partnership offer places India at the forefront of innovation and resilience in naval warfare.
