The early years that changed Indian TV
Sony Entertainment Television introduced audiences to stories and shows that felt modern yet rooted. Aahat CID Dekh Bhai Dekh and Crime Patrol became cultural staples while Boogie Woogie created a new category for dance based reality television. With its mix of drama thrillers and real life content SET built a loyal audience that shaped India’s viewing habits through the late nineties and early 2000s.
Expanding into a multi genre media network
Over time Sony Pictures Networks India grew into a portfolio of twenty eight channels across general entertainment movies, sports kids and infotainment. This diversification reflected India’s evolving tastes while keeping storytelling at the core. The group also built strong regional and digital footprints that made its content accessible across platforms and languages.
Iconic shows that defined generations
In 2009 SPNI brought Kaun Banega Crorepati to its network, reuniting Amitabh Bachchan with audiences and creating one of the most successful shows in Indian history. In 2016 the network became home to The Kapil Sharma Show which cemented its place as a hub of comedy and celebrity entertainment. Both shows remain landmark properties for SPNI demonstrating the power of character driven formats.

The sports pivot that broadened its influence
SPNI entered sports broadcasting in a big way by acquiring the rights for the Indian Premier League in 2008 in a billion dollar deal that lasted ten years. Although it lost those rights in 2017 the company made a comeback in 2024 by securing exclusive media rights for all Asian Cricket Council tournaments until 2031. This move positioned Sony as a major player in premium sports alongside entertainment.
Strengthening the digital future
SonyLIV became SPNI’s bridge to digital audiences offering original series global titles and live sports streaming. Its strong YouTube ecosystem further extended the reach and helped the network capture young digital viewers. SonyLIV’s success proved that the group could balance traditional broadcasting with modern digital storytelling.
The merger that almost was
In December 2021 SPNI announced a merger with Zee Entertainment that promised to create a ten billion dollar media giant. However regulatory and leadership issues delayed the process and by January 2024 Sony terminated the agreement citing unmet conditions. After months of arbitration both parties mutually agreed to withdraw claims in August 2024 closing the chapter cleanly and refocusing on independent growth.
Looking ahead
With a legacy built on trust innovation and storytelling Sony Pictures Networks India is gearing up for its next chapter focused on expanding its digital ecosystem launching more regional and global collaborations and strengthening its sports and entertainment portfolio.
