Television Remains India’s Content Powerhouse

The Indian Broadcasting and Digital Foundation convened its 26th Annual General Meeting in New Delhi, chaired by Kevin Vaz, President of IBDF and CEO of Entertainment at JioStar India. The event brought together leading figures from the media and entertainment industry to evaluate sector growth and set priorities for the future.

Reaffirming the strength of television in India, Vaz emphasized that 97 percent of the nation’s original content is still created for linear TV. In 2024 alone, this amounted to nearly 200,000 hours of programming. With 46 trillion minutes of annual viewing across 190 million screens, television continues to hold a scale that outpaces user-generated video platforms and keeps family co-viewing at the heart of Indian culture.

Leadership Updates and Board Elections

The AGM also marked a transition in leadership. Avinash Pandey was announced as the new Secretary General of IBDF, effective October 1, 2025, succeeding Siddharth Jain. Members extended gratitude to Jain for his contributions and welcomed Pandey as he steps into this pivotal role.

The Board elections reaffirmed continuity and fresh perspectives. Gaurav Banerjee of Culver Max and R Mahesh Kumar of Sun Network were re-elected, while Anil Kumar Singhvi of Zee Media joined as a new member. Vaz was re-elected as President, with Rajat Sharma of India TV, Banerjee, and Kumar serving as Vice Presidents, and I Venkat of Eenadu TV continuing as Treasurer.

Strong Industry Outlook

Vaz highlighted that despite global and economic headwinds, linear television’s fundamentals remain strong. With the festive season approaching and GST reforms boosting confidence, industry leaders anticipate a significant rise in advertising revenues. He described the future as one of evolution, where television’s enduring reach and trust will be amplified by digital capabilities.

A Unified Voice for Growth

Incoming Secretary General Avinash Pandey noted the importance of collaboration at this crucial moment for the industry. He stressed his focus on strengthening dialogue with the government, navigating regulatory changes, and ensuring that the IBDF continues to represent both broadcasting and digital media effectively.

The Bigger Picture

The AGM underscored the continued dominance of television as the backbone of India’s media landscape. As digital platforms grow, TV remains unmatched in reach, cultural impact, and trust. With leadership transitions, renewed policy advocacy, and industry optimism, IBDF aims to ensure that television continues to evolve while remaining central to India’s media future.
